   Sergey Gevorgyan : Biography

Sergey Gevorgyan received his professional musical education in the Armenian capital Yerevan in two specialties : eastern instruments and clarinet. After graduation he started his working career as a musical editor in the music department of the State Committee of Broadcasting. At the same time, he was working as soloist playing the "bambir" (a little known old traditional Armenian instrument) in the National Instruments Ensemble led by Maestro Aram Merangulyan. He twice took part in the Decade of Armenian Culture in Moscow.
In 1961 Sergey won the competition for soloists on national instruments held by the State Committee of Broadcasting. The year after, he won the First Prize and became the Laureate of the All-Soviet-Union Festival. He performed, on antique national wind instruments including the challenging "shvi", the musical works of west European composers and Armenian "gusans" (poet-musicians or minstrels). For this performance he was awarded the high title of Honored Artist of the Armenian Culture.
Sergey Gevorgyan has performed the music of Armenian gusans in twenty-two countries worldwide. His CDs and compact cassettes were produced and sold in the large amount in Armenia and the United States of America. He plays brilliantly five instruments:
"shvi" (a flute-type instrument also known as the Armenian whistle)
"kamancha" (an eastern string instrument, similar to a baroque prototype of the violin)
"bambir" (an eastern string pinch instrument, similar to a baroque prototype of the cello or piccolo cello)
"kanon" (a traditional string pinch instrument, similar to a zither)
"klarnet" (also known as "klarinet", somewhat similar to the western clarinet)
